The Bird Project explores the idea of seeking freedom and connection with a partner. It begins with abstract works, gradually transitioning into more concrete forms, depicting the dynamics of this journey.
Abstract birds barely manifest on the canvases. The absence of clear boundaries between the birds and the environment seems to break down all barriers, although this feeling can be deceptive. This reflects my understanding of freedom, in line with Isaiah Berlin's concepts of negative and positive freedom, freedom from, and freedom to. Freedom from intervention, coercion, or limitation is akin to the notion of independence. Freedom to is the opportunity and availability of resources to realize one's potential. The process of understanding one's own freedom and moving towards selfhood is a personal journey that knows no bounds. Therefore, the birds lack distinct physical contours in the images, almost appearing abstract. Such freedom is only possible in solitude, without close contact with a partner, with the Another.
The appearance of a partner creates symbolic opposition and alters the trajectory of the journey towards one's own freedom and self-understanding. Thus, two birds with clear outlines emerge on the canvas. This clarity reflects the emerging contact, offering opportunities not available in the solitary pursuit of freedom: the chance to better understand oneself through the partner's eyes and enrich one's perspective on the world by accessing alternative viewpoints.
Images featuring paired birds idealize contact between partners, enabling the extraction of the symbolic core of such interaction. There is a collision and interaction resembling the Yin-Yang symbol—mutual interdependence of partners.
However, the partner birds look remarkably similar to each other. This raises the question of whether this is truly contact with the Other or a reflection of oneself in another.
How similar can partners be, and can we recognize differences even in close contact, extending beyond our own boundaries?
